报告题目:Lightning - Observation, Simulation & Protection

报告摘要:Lightning discharges to structures like the power grid transmission tower, communication relay station tower and tall buildings is a big issue we have faced now. The content of this talk includes two major parts. In part I, the speaker will introduce their works on the lightning observation techniques at different frequency bands with various electrical and optical sensors and their recent observation results on the Shenzhen Meteorological Tower. In the part II, the speaker will brief their modeling works on lightning discharges to ground and structures as well as the application of the modelling results on lightning protection issues.

报告人简介:Prof. Chen has a BSc (1985, Lanzhou U, China) in Theoretical Physics, MSc (1988, Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS)) in Atmospheric Physics, and PhD (2000, Gifu U, Japan) in Electrical & Electronic Information Systems. Before joining the department in 2002, he was a researcher in the CAS and a visiting scholar in Gifu University of Japan. He is now in charge of teaching subjects in the area of electric services. His research interest is in the areas of lightning physics and protection, building electrical services, electromagnetic compatibility and power quality. He has been engaged in 43 more research projects funded by CAS, NSFC, GRF (General Research Fund of Hong Kong Government). Particularly, he has won 12 GRFs in a row in last thirteen years, which is a significant outcome of his hard work and dedication to research. He has published 85 more peer-reviewed papers on top journals like the “Geophysical Research Letter”, “J. Geophysical Research”, “Atmospheric Research”, “J. Atmos. and Solar-Terre. Phys.”, “IEEE Trans. Power Delivery”, “IEEE Trans. Magnetics”, “IEEE Trans. Industrial Appl.”, and “IEEE Trans. EMC”, etc., and 115 more conference papers in proceedings of various international conferences. He is the recipient of 18 more academic awards/prizes, including Dean’s Awards (2011, 2014 and 2017, respectively), Best Paper Awards at Asia-Pacific International Conf. on Lightning (2009, 2019), the Second Prize of Science & Technology Progress Award of People’s Liberation Army (1995) and the Second Prize of Science & Technology Progress Award of Chinese Academy of Sciences (1993) etc. His current research project is the study of lightning discharges to the 356 m high Shenzhen Meteorological Gradient Tower based on comprehensive observations and modelling.
